Welcome to Year 1
with Mrs Wilson and Mrs Jones
Welcome back to the Summer term. We hope that you had a relaxing and enjoyable Easter holiday and that you and your child are ready to
begin another exciting term with our new topic ‘Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside’. This will be a stimulating and motivating topic for
the children and we are sure that they will enjoy it! If you have anything interesting to share with the children to do with any of the subjects we are covering, please let us know.
PE lessons this term will be on a Monday and Friday. Please can you make sure that your child has their NAMED PE kit in school for
these days, this includes pumps or trainers for outside games (weather permitting). Please can you ensure hair is tied back on PE days and
any earrings are taken out.
To support your child with their phonic and reading development try some of the games below!
Word Searches - Get your children to simply complete or make up their own word searches. For word searches on the move see if your children can spot words whilst out and about at the supermarket, on the way to school etc. Can they use the letters they have found to make up new words?
Spelling Games - Play word/spelling games like Junior Scrabble, Bananagrams and Boggle to focus on blending letter sounds to make words.
Write a word out – It could be a word from your child's weekly spelling list – cut it up and ask your child to put it back in the correct order.
Travelling Games - Whilst on a car journey encourage your children to make up sentences using the letters and numbers on registration plates or encourage your child to read road signs, to give you directions or to set the satnav!

If you would like to play some Maths games with your child to support their learning try these!
Number Bingo - Write down six numbers for example multiples of 2,5,10 or one half of the bonds to ten. Next call out questions such as 2x5, 3 x 10 or for bonds to ten 6+?=10. The children can then cross out the corresponding number on their bingo grid.
Number Snap - Get your children to make a set of cards one with answers, one with questions that match. E.g. 2 x 5 matches 10. Shuffled the cards and deal them. The general rules of snap apply, when a question and answer match, you shout snap!
Number Match - Write the digits from 0-10 on individual cards. Shuffle them and lay them all out face down. Take it in turns to turn over two cards. If the two cards total 10, you get to keep them. If they don't match, turn them back over. Play until all the cards are gone. The winner is the person with the most pairs. This can be adapted to be used with times tables or number bonds to 20, 30, etc.
